Tooth whitening lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discolorations. Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look. Here at East Yorkshire dental studio we offer take home whitening and also in surgery whitening Whitening is not a one-time procedure Whitening also does not work on ceramic or porcelain crowns or veneers. It will need to be repeated from time to time if you want to maintain the brighter color.

The most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are:

  • Using tobacco
  • Drinking dark-colored liquids such as coffee, cola, tea and red wine
  • Not taking good care of your teeth

Tooth Whitening can be done in 2 ways you can either whiten your teeth at home or you can have the treatmentdone at the practice. For either of the procedures the dentists or the therapist will explain the procedure to you in full. You will need to have a dental examination done with the dentist first to make sure that you are able to have the procedure done. They will also take before pictures so we can monitor your progress. We recommend that before you start the whitening procedure you see one of our dental therapists’s for a routine clean or air flow treatment, this will remove any bacteria, food and other substances that build up on your teeth that contribute to the staining.

If you decided to have the home tooth whitening treatment done your dentists will need to take impressions of your upper and lower teeth so we can make your custom trays that will hold the whitening gel. Once we have received you trays back from the laboarty the dentists or therapist will show you how to lead the whitening gel into your trays which you will need to wear for several hours each day until you have achieved the results you desire. Most patients achieve the amount of whitening they want within a week or two; however everybody is different so you may need to wear them for a few more weeks. Our in surgery treatment works very similar to the take home whitening, you will need to see the dentists first for a pre whitening check and the therapist for a pre whitening clean. The dentists will make you your custom fit trays for this treatment as well.

This treatment is done in the surgery; the procedure will take about 90 minutes. The dentists or therapist will start the treatment by isolating your gums, then placing the whitening gel directly on your teeth, they will then shine a light on your teeth for approximately 15 minutes, after the first 15 minutes they will then remove the whitening gel from your teeth and then place fresh whitening gel back on your teeth and again shine the light for around 15 minutes, this procedure is done around 3 times. Once the treatment is complete the therapist or Dentists will give you your trays along with some home whitening gel so that you can top up your whitening at home if you wanted.

The main difference between the 2 whitening procedures is that the in surgery whitening gives you an instant boost to your whitening treatment. Both ways will give you the same results a whiter brighter smile. With either treatment we will ask you to come back to the practice for a follow up appointment so we can maintain your progress.
