Dentures are removable appliances for missing teeth; they are made of acrylic or metal/acrylic and are custom made to you. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing whereas partial dentures are used when only some natural teeth remain.
Dentures can be either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, the denture is ready to be placed around 8-12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. The dentist takes a series of impressions of the jaw and takes measurements of how your jaws relate to one and other. They then send this off to a laboratory and they create models and wax forms in the exact position the dentures would be when in acrylic this will be tried in 2 times for the perfect fit of your mouth and then the laboratory will cast up the final denture and any adjustments will be made then. This procedure can take up to 4-6 weeks.
Immediate dentures are made in advance if you need to have teeth taken out, an immediate denture is made from acrylic and can be fitted on the day of your appointment when you have the teeth taken out, especially if it is a front tooth you would want something placed straight away. This can then be worn as a temporary denture through the healing process.
These are incredibly easy to adjust and position perfectly.
Dentures are made to match the measurements of your mouth exactly.
